A case of what might have been...

Porter-Clarke brace...

A slightly depleted Shelford squad made the journey south to Colchester on a rather dreary wintry morning. For whatever reason the visitors did not seem to have their heads in the game at the start and after some fairly even but somewhat scrappy opening exchanges they soon found themselves 19-0 down. All three scores were the result of simple missed tackles and it is always going to be difficult to win a game when three such soft tries are conceded. It was not as if Shelford did not have their fair share of possession but they struggled to get any rhythm into their play and made too many unforced errors.

The second half was altogether a different affair. Shelford began to get some real vim in their attacks putting together some excellent phases of play. They started to use their brains and put boot to ball to great effect with some good run chases to follow up. They were soon rewarded when Henry Porter-Clarke received the ball in mid-field and used his electric pace to score, with Harvey Taylor converting. There was a real chance of getting back into the game but the task was made all the more difficult when some quick handling through the Colchester backs resulted in another converted score. Shelford were by no means done yet and whilst they might have been guilty of kicking a tad too often, overall they made good ground and a well weighted kick by Kyle Harris gave Henry Porter-Clarke the chance to sprint through to collect and score from the 22. The clock was against the visitors but at the death they pounced on a turnover deep in opposition territory and Will Rand drove through to score to narrow the final deficit to 26-17.
