Shepshed included their fourth goalkeeper of the season, Ayden Duffy making his debut replacing James Elliott who dropped down to the bench. Also making his debut was Markell Bailey in the number 7 shirt.

Referee Rogers soon marked his authority by yellow carding Kidsgrove skipper Craig Dove for failing to retreat at a Shepshed free-kick in the seventh minute of the game. Soon after this Dove found himself running a fine line as he brought down Iain Screaton, on the edge of the penalty area, as the Dynamo captain cut in from the right. Richard Wilson’s resultant free kick curled into the net, without a touch, only to be mysteriously disallowed for alleged offside.

The Dynamo had the better of the first half. Steve Chaplin put Wilson away who shot straight at the advancing keeper Steve Hodgson. A free kick by Gamble to Bailey on the right was lashed across the face of the goal with no one able to get a touch. Alex Haughton skipped his way past two defenders in the penalty area only to have his shot blocked – a move that deserved better.

It wasn’t all one way though. A 30 yard crosses cum shot from Sam Hall hit the floor a couple of yards in front of Duffy and bounced wickedly over his head and outstretched arms to fortunately go a yard wide of the far post. Duffy did well to save a vicious drive from Steve Brannan.

Five minutes into the second half the visitors might have taken the lead when a huge scramble at the base of Duffy’s right hand post was somehow cleared. At the other end a Gamble free kick into the penalty area just eluded the inrushing Chaplin, then seconds later Hodgson did well to save a good effort by the same player.

Chaplin continued to cause some havoc in the Athletic defence. Winning the ball in the air he turned a defender and shot narrowly over the bar. Then after good work down the right flank he crossed to Haughton on the near post who flicked the ball just over.

The game was now speeding up and in the 68th minute Shepshed took the lead and the scorer had to be Chaplin. A long ball out of defence found the Dynamo No 9, who squeezed past two defenders to strike a perfect ball past Hodgson.

Within four minutes Kidsgrove equalized when they were awarded a controversial penalty. Initially the referee played on when the ball bounced and seemingly struck the arm of a retreating Shepshed defender but when the attacking player failed to gain an advantage awarded the spot kick. Although Duffy did get a hand to Dave Walker’s kick such was the power he was never going to avoid conceding.

Their was no doubt about the 81st minute penalty which deservedly gave Shepshed victory, Daniel Smith hacking down Alex Haughton as he broke through and was about to net the ball from five yards. Up stepped Gamble to power in a shot which hit the underside of the bar, bounced down and then up into the roof of the net.

After the disappointment of FA Cup elimination this was just the tonic the Dynamo needed and was joyously appreciated by the Shepshed faithful who first the first time since October 2009 witnessed two successive home league victories.
