Insurance Cover in the Event of Injury

As a member of Sherborne Rugby Club - and assuming due membership fees have been paid - players are covered under the RFUs Insurance Policy.

In simplistic terms, this only provides cover against major debilitating injury like the loss of an eye or limb, severe paralysis or permanent total disablement involving loss of employment; actual policy wording is available on request. However, a recent injury involving the loss of a tooth has resulted in a family paying for dental treatment they feel is necessary over and above that provided by the NHS. It is therefore worth highlighting to parents and players that they should consider additional sports injury insurance cover if they feel the RFU's cover inadequate.

Gum shields: the club holds stock of relatively cheap gum shields as all players MUST wear this protective equipment to play. Again it is worth pointing out that dentists can provide gum shields tailored to a players teeth; they are more expensive but may provide additional protection. If interested, please seek advice from your dentist

Are there specific companies that deal with sports cover and do you have any information regarding additional sports injury insurance?

The RFU's insurance brokers are Marsh ( You can find them via the RFU website) and I believe they recommend a few policies through Pinnacle Insurance, Aviva and Sports Cover Direct amongst others. The typical cost is between £7.50 and £15 per month.
