Dear SRFC VP,
After the excitement of a cup final win the previous week it was back to league action for the 1st XV last weekend. Having narrowly beaten North Dorset on neutral ground the week before the league encounter at North Dorset appeared to be a tough test for Sherborne. Countering that league form suggested that North, having won five of their nine games, might not be strong enough to offer a real challenge. I wasn't at the game and haven't heard anything about it but the result, a 31-10 win for Sherborne, suggested that whilst North had raised their game for the cup final they were unable to sustain that into the league encounter.
The win sees Sherborne continue to lead the way in Southern Counties South with Trowbridge looking the most likely to step in if the wheels fall off at some point. No doubt the game between the two at Sherborne on 13th January will prove to be pivotal to the promotion aspirations of both sides.
The 2nd XV had a weekend off when the 1st XV won the cup and were returning to league action with an away game at East Dorset 1st XV. The opposition had won six of their nine league games to date and there was some hope therefore that they would provide entertaining opposition. As it happened the game was extremely one sided with Sherborne scoring 83 points and keeping a clean sheet as they overran their hosts. Puddletown returned to winning ways after their defeat at Sherborne and will, no doubt, keep Sherborne on their toes in the second half of the season.
This weekend both the 1st and 2nd XVs complete their league fixtures for the first half of the season. The 1st XV entertain Swindon College Old Boys with the visitors sitting mid table and having won five of their ten fixtures in the league. Sherborne will be looking to finish the first half of the season with a flourish and unbeaten. Hopefully Swindon will not spoil the party but will prove to be entertaining opposition. This one kicks off at 14:15.
The 2nd XV entertain New Milton 3rd XV. The visitors have lost a number of high scoring games by narrow margins but, having lost narrowly to East Dorset two games back will probably not be relishing the trip to Sherborne. This one also kicks off at 14:15.
On Sunday the Colts have slotted in a round robin competition with North Dorset and Castle Cary in order to keep playing some rugby before the second phase of the Merit Table kicks off in the New Year. The tournament will be hosted by Sherborne and the first match kicks off at 14:00.
