Bear Lose Crossbar Challenge
Bear FC prove as good as potential champions, just not as good as the crossbar.
After having their last game postponed, Bear FC came into the game against Headstock well prepared and with a strong team on the pitch. Manager Luke Prokopiuk gave his debut to Mo Saibu and continued to press with the 4-5-1 formation.
The match started brightly with Bear carving some decent chances, most notable when winger Mark Gallagher hit the crossbar from a cross from midfielder Ben Evans. The match then became a battle in midfield with each team showing quality and patience, that is until defender extraordinaire Tom Hughes lost his composure and with it conceded a penalty. Stand in goalkeeper Luke Stephenson who had a quiet day until this, dived the wrong way and Bear were one down.
After this moment, the defence up’d their game, leading from the back and forcing Bear back into the game, the ever tricky Mo Saibu showing what Bear have missed this season with a turn accustom to be seen in a Barcelona game, before slotting through to Bemnet Berhane. Still with a job to do, Bemnet turned his man before firing in from 14 yards. With the match well balanced, Headstock started gaining more possession but couldn’t break down the hardworking Bear and were forced to play backwards and sideways. Next came and incredible footballing moment, with a beautiful ball played by stirker Bement Berhane, the goalkeeper missed it and the arriving Ben Evans had the simplest of tasks – scoring from two yards. This pressure was too much for the midfield dynamo, who found it much easier to head into the ground and over the bar, only he knows how.
Another set piece, another goal for Headstock. A corner floated into the box and a goalmouth scrambled ensued, with a Headstock midfielder finding the only free spot in the goal to rifle the ball in to again give the advantage to them. The lead didn’t last long and again Bears fighting spirit was there for all to see. A Headstock move broke down and the ball was quickly played through to Bemnet, he took his man before playing in Mo Saibu who cooly slotted home. Bear we again on the front foot after this, denied not by Headstock, but by the woodwork. First came Jordan Smith, who had already tried his luck from distance a few times to no avail; shooting from distance which left the keeper rooted before cannoning off the crossbar. Next came Tom Robertson’s chance. A corner floated to the back post where Tom was lurking, rising highest to head the ball back towards goal, again beating the goalkeeper but he crossbar stood strong.
Headstock hit Bear on the counter attack, and if it wasn’t for a professional tackle by Tom Robertson then Bear may have been behind through that attack. That moment unfortunately happened in the final few minutes of the game, Headstock with an attack that somehow found their man 10 yards out after a ricochet to slot past the goalkeeper.
The final whistle blew and although disappointed with the result, no one was disappointed with the effort and ability shown against one of the league’s top runners. With the season approaching the end, Bear definitely showed a recipe for success.
MOM – Tom Robertson
