Back to winning ways...
After our recent results it was good for the lads to be on the winning side. There's been very little wrong with the way we've been playing which is good, even great in patches, but we didn't want the lads to get to downhearted with the results so it was nice to get a few goals today.
We started off well with most of the possession and territory but struggled to make any clear cut chances. We earned loads of corners but couldn't convert them to goals even though we varied them with low crosses, high crosses, short corners and one twos. It was encouraging to see the boys do this without any prompting from Benno or me.
Eventually we did break them down with an excellent shot from Josh Slater which was superbly saved by Jordan White and then finished by Jordan White. Some would say he 'stole' Josh's goal but Jordan assured me it was going wide, even though he was stood on the line in the middle of the goal when he stopped it...
Harry Edwards-Morris had little to do in the first 10 minutes but a couple of breaks from Spring View saw him called to action but he was up to the task. His distribution was superb and the best it's been with his varying throws, kicks from hand and dead balls.
We had a couple of decent breaks with good inter passing between Josh Slater and Tom Ogden but they didn't result in clear chances.
Spring Views best bit of play lead to their only goal shortly before half time. Our defence and midfield were caught out and their centre forward finished superbly.
Halftime came and I really thought we could be on for a repeat of our last few games where we've had most of the ball, played the better football but not won the game.
The second half saw us play much more like we can. Joel Tierney and Jordan White linked up excellently with some great passing and taking the opposition on at the right time. Joel started the move from midfield that lead to him receiving the ball back and tucking it into the bottom corner for our second goal and his well deserved first for the club. Elliott Shorrocks and Dillon Bennett pushed right up from defence and that helped us keep everything in Spring Views half and keep the pressure on. Tom Boyle moved to his more familiar role of Right wing and made good yards and put in some good crosses with one of them leading to Connor Taylor's goal. A hard and low cross took a deflection and Connor turned and rattled it to the left of the keeper to make it 3-1.
Our best bit of play came when a move involving most of the team pulled Spring View all over the park and was finished with an excellent cross from Jordan White that Eddie Braithwaite got his head onto but just put it wide. It would have been my goal of the season and even the Spring View linesman was applauding the play.
Dillon Bennett nearly got his first of the season too when he rattled the post from a good distance out When Spring View cleared a corner.
The opposition struggled to get any decent possession in our half in the second half and were left chasing long balls which Harry came out of his area to deal with comfortably.
Our final goal came when Tom Ogden broke down the right and backed himself against the defender. He knocked it past, chased it down and tucked it into the bottom right corner of the goals to make it 4-1.
Man of the match was Joel Tierney with some good passing, hard work and his first goal. A special mention for Jordan White who showed some excellent touches and skills on the right and left and put in some excellent crosses.
Coaches Award went to Harry Edwards-Morris. Although he had very few shots to save, his distribution was superb and although most of the play was 50yds away from him he was talking and trying to organise the lads from his area.
