Are you a former player who fancy’s a new challenge?

Are you a former player who fancy’s a new challenge? Seen a referee on during a game and thought that’s something you could do?

I’m writing to see if you have considered becoming a Match Official in the open age leagues. I’m looking for individuals who have a good understanding of the game and can call on their playing experience to assist the community game.

It’s no secret that the majority of Match Officials have all played the game at some point in their Rugby League career and this experience has given them a jump start when officiating the game due to their understanding of player traits and overall knowledge of the game. Could this be you?

Regardless of age, as long as you’re keen and could enjoy refereeing for 80 minutes in a local amateur open age game, then we have a place for you!

Tony Mahar a Match Official from Widnes started his rugby career playing in Widnes and on finishing playing decided to take up the whistle and he’s gone from strength to strength. Calling on his own experiences he quickly progressed through the NWC’s open age and National Conference leagues and is now an academy referee and also officiates on Super League, all in the space of 4 years!

The North West has an excellent record of producing officials who progress through the game with officials of all ages enjoying the many benefits of refereeing from officiating some of the top local amateur games to internationals, could you be one of these officials? Likewise if you can spare one Saturday a month to referee there’s also a place for you!

To qualify you’ll need to attend a Referees course, the course costs £25 for adults and £12.50 for Under 18’s and runs between 9:15 – 16:00

The next one day courses coming up are on;

· Saturday 28th January @ William Beamont High School, Warrington

· Saturday 11th February @ Thatto Heath ARLFC, St Helens

· Saturday 25th February @ Salford Sports Village, Salford

To apply for one of these courses or for further information, myself, Peter Brooke on peter.brooke@rfl.uk.com or 07738 131790 or Jodie White on Jodie.white@rfl.uk.com
