Sharks turn Clocks Forwards successfully!

Spring had definitely sprung this weekend and the sun was beating down on the St JohnRigby fields where Shevington Sharks were taking on Clock Face this morning. The conditions were excellent for rugby as the match kicked off.

The opening exchanges suggested that the teams were evenly matched with the Visitors just gaining the upper hand in terms of territorial advantage. As the game was starting to settle down the Sharks defence appeared to go to sleep for a second and Clock Face were through for a try under the posts with virtually no Shevington tackle in sight. The Visitors converted the try with similar ease with which they strolled over the line and the score line was 0 - 6.

The Sharks threatened to respond quickly but several handling errors took the momentum out of each attempt to challenge the Clock Face line.

Eventually the Sharks settled down and begun to look more like their old selves. Strong running by MATTHEW CLEARY and Alex Valentine together with tight defence and solid sweeping and counter attack play by Dec kay provided a platform for the Sharks to build on. The Sharks gradually gained increasingly threatening field position. They also started to turn on some impressive attacking moves which had clearly come from the training ground. As the whistle blew for half time the Sharks were still trailing 0 - 6 but they finished the period as the stronger team.

The Sharks had moved up a gear as the second half commenced. Strong running and quick recycling led almost immediately to JOSH HOUGHTON dancing through a gap and over the line to score the Sharks opening try. Shane Melling converted bringing the score to 6 - 6.

The Sharks quickly took the lead through a top class try from Kyle Shelford. He had found a gap in the Visitors defence on half way then neat inter passing with the supporting JOSH HOUGHTON left him crossing under the posts Shane Melling converted.

The Visitors hauled themselves back into the game with a try as the Sharks defence again failed to deal with a large runner. They converted and the score was level again at 12 - 12.

From that point onwards the Sharks took control of the game. They threatened to score several times but several unnecessarily desperate offload passes went to ground. The score did eventually come when a well weighted kick from JOSH HOUGHTON was followed up by Alex Valentine who gathered and went over under the posts for a try which Shane Melling converted.

The next Sharks try went to Matt Boyers who after securing possession through a ball steal received  a pass seconds later and ducked below a tackle to score.Shane Mellings conversion took the score to 24 - 12.

The Sharks superior fitness was beginning  to show and the game was made safe when JOSH HOUGHTON jinked his way through some flailing tackles and he just made the line for a try. Shane Melling rounded off an exemplary kicking display with the conversion which took the final score to 30 - 12.

In the end a convincing victory with some promising attacking moves and generally solid defense on display from the Sharks.

The man of the match award was shared by Alex Valentine and DOMINIC LOMAX who were both busy throughout t he game and gained valuable yards through strong runining.
