Matlock Town - Match Preview
Shirebrook Town’s pre-season preparations continue this Saturday with the visit to Langwith Road of Evo-Stik Premier Division side Matlock Town.
And it will be a first opportunity for the home supporters to get a look at the squad of players new manager Gary Castledine is putting together for the coming season, which begins a fortnight later with an away trip to Bottesford Town in the NCEL Division One.
And although the results in friendly games are mostly unimportant, Gary Castledine must be hoping his players can begin to find the back of the opposition’s net, unlike last time out against Glapwell when the side failed to score in a 2-0 defeat, and that despite a raft of chances going begging.
But it won’t be easy against the Gladiators, who finished last season just inside the bottom half of the Premier Division table, and Matlock boss Mark Atkins will be hoping for much better in the upcoming campaign.
The Matlock Town website reports on 18/07/2012:
After three weeks of training, the Gladiators finally got their pre season friendly programme under way with a 2-1 win at Teversal on Tuesday night when a trialist hammered them in front in just thirty six seconds. They were well on top but could not strike again and out of the blue the Northern Counties East League First Division hosts levelled five minutes from the interval with their first shot at goal from Shaun Tuton. A more even second period followed and Lewis McMahon struck the decider with just four minutes remaining, sweeping in a Brad Grayson cross.
"I'm pleased with the lads so far, they look fit and have done all of the work we've asked them to," said Atkins. "They're sharp and playing the ball around a lot more, different to last season."
There were three other trialists on view at Teversal, one an experienced midfielder who slotted in next to James Ashmore with ease. All of the trialists plus a couple of their under nineteen squad should be on view at Shirebrook Town in the second friendly on Saturday. Then comes the annual Banner Jones Cup meeting with Chesterfield on Tuesday.
"It'll again be a case of a lot of people getting forty five minutes in on Saturday before against Chesterfield I'll use those lads who I feel are more up to speed both in fitness and ball work," the manager continued.
There will be no matchday programme for Saturday’s game, but the snack bar and clubhouse facilities will be open.
The game kicks-off at 3 o’clock and admission prices will be £4.00 for Adults, £3.00 for Concessions and £1.00 for Children.
