Shirebrook Embarrassed By Rampant Selby
The first game of 2019 couldn’t have gone any worse for Shirebrook as they were embarrassed by Selby Town
The game got off to the worst possible start when Selby took the lead in the 4th minute of the game when a central fee kick about 30 yards out was touched on by Liam Flanagan to Louis Hutton. Who smashed it past Levi Owen on the Shirebrook goal and into the bottom corner Shirebrook began to grow into the game but struggled to muster an attack on goal with a Carter Widdowson free kick the only effort to shout about for the visiting side but the Selby attacking players were causing all sorts of problems for the Shirebrook defence and it felt like a matter of time before the home side doubled there lead and they did in the 17th minute when Fraser Hansen picked the ball up and went on a mazy run he glided past the Shirebrook defence and slotted the ball into the bottom corner Selby keep pushing and in the 33rd minute Selby got there 3rd when a free kick on the left found Gary Collier at the near post and he headed in and 3 minutes later it was 4 when a cross from the left was headed into his own net by Carter Widdowson Shirebrook managed to make it to the break without any more damage to the score line.
The second half was all about damage limitation for Shirebrook and they were doing a good job of it until the 56th minute when Liam Flanagan set off on a run and beat his man. He then unleashed a shot which whistled past Levi Owen and nestled in the top corner of the net with the points in the bag the party tricks were now coming out for the goal number 6 when Levi Owen beat out a Liam Flanagan shot which fell to Fraser Hansen and from a tight angle a back heal somehow found its way into the net the scoring was finally complete in the 72nd minute when a deep free kick was nodded back towards the six yard area and Chris Bilton reacted quickest to head the ball past Owen in the Shirebrook goal Shirebrook managed to see out the final 20 minutes without the score line becoming anymore embarrassing and were thankful when the ref finally blew for time.
After the game Joint Shirebrook Manager Alan Widdowson spoke to The Bootiful Game to give his thoughts on the game
“I would like to apologies to the Committee and supporters of Shirebrook Town FC for that shambolic performance We, as a group including myself and Lee, take full responsibility for that embarrassment It was not acceptable at all and we will get the lads in midweek to have a chat and see how we can resolve this situation and then prepare for the game on Saturday. We need to get that Shirebrook spirit and heart back which has been lacking lately. It hurts to see that and we as a group are the only ones that can put it right”
