Wood get superb point at Evesham
Robins 2 Wood 2
A Shortwood side already down to the bare bones suffered two more blows when Jordan Morris was forced to pull out through illness and Rich Thwaite suffered a puncture on route to the ground forcing more changes on the depleted side. What followed was a remarkable display of spirit and togetherness as the Wood defied the odds to get a point against a strong Evesham side. Des Meredith was rightly proud of his side afterwards. “We kept our shape, got men behind the ball and kept going – we deserved that point!”
After only 8 minutes Wood took the lead through a spectacular own goal. Will Hawes, who was Wood’s man of the match got away down the left and fired over a fierce cross which Nick Rhodes headed fiercely past keeper Kevin Sawyer. Evesham responded and Adam Mann fired over from a good position and Haskayne rattled the Wood bar from 20 yards. To be honest it was no surprise when Evesham levelled after 23 minutes Mann converting Binns low cross at the far post and when Liddiard scored with a spectacular volley just a minute later things looked bad for Shortwood. For all their dominance Evesham could not find a third and Rich Thwaite came on to take his place in the heart of the defence.
Slowly Wood started to create themselves and Freeman made an excellent run but his show was wide.
With Wood going in at half time with only the one goal deficit there was always a chance and although the alert Ryan Thwaite cleared a looping header away just two minutes of the restart Evesham became more and more reliant on crosses which the perfectly shaped Wood defended stoutly while looking more dangerous on the break. Then after 73 minutes Wood got the break they needed. Will Hawes intercepted a bad ball and set Freeman away. Freeman ran on and Sawyer could only parry his fierce shot straight to Chris Earle who slammed the ball joyfully home. Mann forced Burton to turn round a free kick and Burton also saved a shot from Binns but they could not find a way through for a second goal.
A defeat for Shortwood would have been harsh and they deserved the very warm applause from the travelling faithful at the end!
