Wood go down to Evesham
by Harry Ash
A difficult evening for Shortwood, with effectively ten players due to the injured Liam Meredith having to play, ended in defeat, but by no means a disgraceful one given the circumstances.
Shortwood managed to fashion an opening five minutes in, after Jordan Morris squared to Will Hawes, but his effort from twenty-five yards was too high to trouble Kevin Sawyer. Six minutes later, a run down the left from Garyn Preen resulted in Evesham’s first chance, but the ball bounced up as Preen attempted to curl into the top corner, and his shot flew over. An important intervention by Matt Liddiard prevented a clear Shortwood chance, as the defender got his head to Hawes’ cross with Jack Freeman unmarked behind the defender. Two minutes later, with just under twenty played, a Nick Hancock cross was bundled in by Preen, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Midway through the half, though, Evesham did find a way through, Liddiard heading Preen’s cross into the bottom corner to make it 0-1. Archie Haskayne could have doubled the advantage when he was found by Hancock’s pull back, but Harry Pickering pulled off a good save as Shortwood attempted to rally the pressure building on their goal. Two quick fire goals ten minutes before half time killed the game, as Adam Mann powered his way into the box before finishing into the near-post corner, before, two minutes later, another Hancock cross found Mann once again, who headed into the bottom right-hand corner.
The second half drifted by with little incident, which suited a Shortwood side just trying to get to the final whistle without a seven or eight goal deficit. Substitutes Matt Bennett and Cameron Ebbutt combined with just over ten minutes to play, resulting in the latter’s header hitting the cross bar. Evesham scored their fourth with three minutes to go, some good interplay between Ollie Mehew and Jordan Bryan creating an opening for Mehew, who calmly finished into the bottom corner.
