Shotton Steel 26 Benllech 3
CENTRE Louis McDonnell grabbed a late try as Shotton Steel secured a bonus point win at home to Benllech.
The win puts Shotton six points clear of second place Rhos, and seven ahead of third place Llangollen with Steel still having a game in hand on both their closest rivals.
From the get-go Benllech were very active at the breakdown looking to keep the ball tight and play territory.
Steel aided this by giving away numerous early penalties which eventually led to the away side getting the first points of the day through a penalty.
The home side enjoyed some good pressure, and after a good break from lock Pete Ketland, it was his second-row partner Mike Howells who was on hand to score, with Steve Ellson adding the extras.
Shotton added a second try before the break after securing good ball from the base of a scrum.
The bulk of the second period was played out in the visitors’ half but a mixture of good defence and a lack of accuracy at times from the homeside meant Steel were never able to get away from their dogged opponents.
McDonnell grabbed a score midway through the half and then went on to snatch the bonus point with just a couple of minutes remaining. Ellson added the extras on both occasions.
