Shotton Steel 103 Welshpool 3
SHOTTON Steel moved to within a bonus point win of clinching the Division Three North title with a thumping win at home to Welshpool.
Welshpool went into the game having won their last three in the league, including a home win over Llangollen, but were never in touch as Steel let loose right from the word go.
The home side notched nine tries in the first half, making the most of the dry conditions and firm ground to really get some pace on the ball and work it out wide whenever they could. Welshpool went close at the end of the first half after some good pick and go but a penalty was their only score.
The second half saw the visitors limit Steel’s chances somewhat, but they still managed to go through the 100-point mark.
Winger John Ketland and No8 Daniel Lynskey both notched hat-tricks, Lynskey now has an incredible 41 tries this season, with Ketland not too far behind on 38.
Other scorers included Adam Lynskey, Karl Rusowicz (2), Steve Ellson (2), Pete Ketland (2), Mark Higgins, and Martin Harvey.
Of the 15 scores, fly-half Ellson was successful with 14 conversions.
Captain Mark Higgins said: “I would say in the first half that is probably the best we have played all season. We came into the game knowing Welshpool had some good results of late, but we never allowed them to settle and took our chances really well.
“Dan Lynskey and John Ketland get a lot of credit for their scoring exploits, and rightly so, but everyone from 1 to 15 played their part today.
“We now have two really tough games against Rhos and Llangollen but go into them full of confidence after they way we played.”
