Any encounter against a Birmingham team is likely to be a tough test. It was clear to see, as the giant outfit from Yardley took to the pitch this would be no exception. With a clear weight and height advantage Shrewsbury knew any close quarter combat would only have resulted in defeat.
The ability of Shrewsbury to vary their game structure and strategy to counter the opponents strength was a delight to watch. Even with several player unavailable through injury and shopping trips the selected team did not let the home support down, scoring some fabulous worked team tries.
In the last five minutes Shrewsbury were reduced to 12 players with 3 players sin binned for offenses at the breakdown. The determination of the team to hold out for a hard fought victory is testament to their new found attitude and the positivity running through the club.
The final score was 29 - 27
Next Saturday sees the first team squad travel to Newcastle to resume their league campaign. This will be another massive test for the squad as Newcastle have so far recorded a 100% winning record this season, and surely go in to this game as favourite, with Shrewsbury underdogs.
