This was always going to be an uncomfortable nervous afternoon. An away trip to Burntwood will always prove one very stern test for the away team. Their record is one of the strongest in the league, given they have only lost one previous home game this season.
A repeat of last weeks performance would have proved disastrous for the Blues, we could not afford to let our standards slip for a consecutive week. Once the squad got the journey out of their legs, settled in to their game, it was evident that lessons from the previous had be learned. We were far more clinical, moving the ball effectively around the park, with all players heavily involved.
Credit to Burntwood they provided a good test for the away team, it is easy to see why their home record is so good. Given that, having ran in two first half converted tries plus a penalty, it was clear Shrewsbury were determined to leave with five league points.
Within a few minutes of the re-start the Blues extended their lead, putting the game beyond doubt. Three more tries increased the pressure on Burntwood, who never gave up, eventually crossing Shrewsbury's line in the later stages of the game.
The final score being 8 - 36, with Shrewsbury scoring five tries achieving a tenth consecutive bonus point in this league campaign.
The squads approach to this tricky game, demonstrates how mature and professional the boys have become over the past season. They have increased their understanding of the game, structure, decision making, able to change the way they play to counter the opponents. They deserve great credit and goes to show, when the commitment is there, there are no limits as to what these boys can achieve.
That is one of our four away games dealt with. Next week we travel to Wednesbury, knowing that only our best performance will be good enough.
