Shrewsbury Under 10's Compete in the Prima Cup

Shrewsbury Under 10’s compete in the Prima Cup 16th January 2016.

The Prima Cup is a competition run by the Leicester Tigers. Shrewsbury played in a qualifying round in October but did not progress to the Prima Bowl or Cup. Shrewsbury were selected out the 64 teams that missed out to compete for the Prima Shield.

Game 1 Shrewsbury vs Hinckley
Hinckley started well but some stout defence from John Innes slowed their progress. Shrewsbury continued to defend strongly but Hinckley were awarded a free pass for Shrewsbury not releasing at the tackle. Hinckley scored their first try after some time in the Shrewsbury half.

Some good counter rucking from Angus McKelvie resulted in a turnover. A quick pass was made to Tom Brown who scored for Shrewsbury. Ned Owen tested the Hinckley defence with his distribution. Jayden worked tirelessly in defence.

Huw Watson took his turn to make some big tackles. Hinckley off loaded in a tackle and scored their second try. The momentum shifted back to Shrewsbury as Matthew Brooks intercepted a Hinckley pass and raced away to score for Shrewsbury. With the score at 2-2 it was all to play for. Finnen Cooke ripped the ball and Shrewsbury were camped on the Hinckley try line. Shrewsbury finished the stronger but could not get the decisive score. A draw was a fair reflection of the match.

Game 2 Shrewsbury vs Tamworth

The Tamworth players were significantly bigger than Shrewsbury. This was going to be a difficult task for Shrewsbury. Another interception early in the game resulted in Angus McKelvie scoring a try for Shrewsbury. Tamworth’s big players ran hard at the Shrewsbury defence. Shrewsbury had to work really hard to stop Tamworth scoring.

Shrewsbury showed their pace with a try for Lucas Ellam running ¾ of the pitch. Another big tackle from Finnen slowed the Tamworth attack. Tristan’s good footwork moved Shrewsbury towards the Tamworth try line.

Shrewsbury scored another two tries by Lucas Ellam and Matthew Brooks. Theo McAree worked very hard to score Shrewsbury's next try but was tackled twice just short of the Tamworth try line.

Final score Shrewsbury 4 – Tamworth 0
The team had an excellent day with the Tigers and the other teams. One team had travelled from Jersey!. The atmosphere in the stadium was fantastic. It was a great opportunity to play some different teams on the Tigers pitch. The team stayed at Leicester Tigers to watch the Tigers beat Treviso.
