Bowlers wrap up quick win in rain-affected Dorridge trip

An emphatic 10-wicket win at Dorridge means Shrewsbury’s quest to become Birmingham League champions once more goes into Saturday’s final day of the season.

But only a similarly convincing margin of victory against leaders Knowle & Dorridge at London Road will be enough for Shrewsbury to dramatically leapfrog the table-toppers and take the silverware.

As Shrewsbury were cruising to a big win at Dorridge in a rain-affected clash last weekend, it was business as usual for K&D as, inspired by a ninth century of the season from their prolific New Zealand international batsman George Worker, they overcame Ombersley to remain 20 points clear.

Shrewsbury now have to just hope they can dismiss K&D for less than 100 this weekend and then knock off the required runs while losing no more than two wickets in the process to deny the table-toppers the single bonus point they need to be champions.

“We’re doing all we can and there’s not much more we could have done last weekend,” said Shrewsbury captain Ben Stebbings. "We’ve got to thank the Dorridge guys for giving us the opportunity to have a game. They tried hard to get the pitch ready and get the covers on.”

A delayed start saw Shrewsbury keen to make up for lost time when play eventually started at 4.10pm as they skittled mid-table Dorridge for just 53 inside 16 overs.

Dillon Pennington took 3-6 and Mike Barnard, the premier division’s leading wicket-taker this season, claimed 3-17 while there was also some joy with the ball for Warwickshire seamer George Panayi (2-4) and Ed Foster (2-21).

Shrewsbury openers Will Parton (23no) and Ollie Westbury (22no) quickly made light work of the chase as the county towners eased to 58-0 from the first ball of the 12th over to wrap up a comfortable win.

Stebbings added: “It was a good toss to win and we bowled brilliantly to roll them. They came out trying to play some shots which we knew they would, but we did all we can.

"Mike and Ed bowled well before George and Dillon came on and just flew straight through they them; they were too quick for them.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work for us down the road (with K&D also winning).”

Elsewhere, Shrewsbury II, mathematically confirmed as reserve division two north champions a week earlier, stayed 70 points clear at the top of the table with a 42 run home win against Milford Hall II.

Shrewsbury, who wrap up their successful season at Fordhouses II on Saturday, totalled 160-6 from a reduced allocation of 20 overs owing to the wet weather before dismissing Milford Hall for 118.

Shrewsbury’s main contributors with the bat were Adam Keen (36), Jon Anders (29) and Tom Somerville (25) before Bradley Thornton helped bowl the London Road second string to another victory.
