It's six of the best for Shrewsbury after they continued their blistering run in the Birmingham Cricket League's premier division with a convincing home win over Barnt Green.

With Worcestershire vice-captain Joe Leach lending his support as a spectator at London Road - his fine form for the Pears has meant he's not been available to play for Shrewsbury this season - the county towners made it six victories in a row with a 91 run triumph.

Shrewsbury, who sit second in the table, will now be seeking to extend their excellent form as they prepare for a double-header over the Bank Holiday weekend.

They head to Walsall on Saturday before hosting clear leaders Berkswell, the team set to inherit their crown as champions, on Monday.

"We've been playing so much better and the balance in our team is better," said Shrewsbury captain Rob Foster, who struck a half century in his side's latest triumph.

"We're looking a better all round unit really from one to 11."

Foster is delighted that Shrewsbury are riding so high given the number of key players they lost from last season's title side - with Steve Leach, Tom Cox, Steve Barnard, Alex Blofield, Anthony Parker and Charlie Morris all moving on.

Shrewsbury, invited to bat first last weekend, rattled up a useful 233-9 from their 50 overs, with Warwickshire leg spinner Josh Poysden, who has played regularly for the Edgbaston club's first team this season, taking 6-39 from 10 overs.

Skipper Foster, at No 6, led the way with 61 from 80 balls while there were other useful contributions from Ben Stebbings (48) and Will Parton (36) as Shrewsbury performed solidly with the bat in their first game since former professional Adam Shantry decided it was time to retire from playing owing to persistent problems with his knees.

Barnt Green, in reply, then fell away from 41-1 to 76-6, the slide starting when Ed Pollock, another Warwickshire man, was impressively caught and bowled by Mike Barnard, who bowled eight sharp overs for 2-11.

Worcestershire Academy prospect Pennington helped himself to 3-17 from a lively four-over burst while there was also some joy with the ball for James Hulton-Harrap (2-11), with his victims including Poysden for 16, caught behind by Ed Foster.

Set a revised target of 209 owing to a break for rain, Barnt Green eventually pulled up well short, dismissed for 117 inside 37 overs.

"Dillon Pennington blew them away really in the middle period and took three wickets," added skipper Foster. "For his age, a 17-year-old lad, he's quick. He's had a bit of a problem with his back, so he's restricted with what he can bowl.

"Last weekend he could only bowl four overs. We would have quite liked him to bowl a few more, but obviously we have to be respectful to what Worcestershire want.

"They want to manage his work load, so if he's down there training with them and bowls 10 overs in the week, they limit him to a certain number of overs.

"We had high hopes at the beginning of the season that he would play all year. It hasn't worked out quite like that, but it's great to see him come back from his injury, which no young player wants to have, and bowl as well as he is."

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury II were rained off without a ball bowled in reserve division one at Barnt Green II. The London Road second teamers, bottom of the table, host Walsall II on Saturday before travelling to Astwood Bank II on Monday.
