RAIDERS SENT HOME EMPTY HANDED

The U12's picked up another two points with a convincing win over Oulton Raiders.

The Raiders came to Chevinedge but left left without any loot as The Bulldogs ran out comfortable winners. Whilst not quite hitting the heights of the previous week in terms of performance the boys made it three league wins out of four and picked up another welcome two points.

Last weeks match report lauded the boys for excellent teamwork, starting well, set completion and line speed. Today, we did fall short of those high standards tending to rely on some good individual displays and moments of brilliance rather than a strong team performance. Nevertheless it was more than enough to overcome a decent Oulton outfit. It will take good individual displays, moments of brilliance and a strong team performance to compete with the best in Yorkshire which is where we want to be but to be able to put a score like today on the board without being at our best suggests we are moving in the right direction.

Once again the issue of line speed reared it's ugly head again. All to often we sat back and allowed the opposition to run at us gaining valuable ground. That's not to say we didn't tackle well it's just that we made life more difficult for ourselves by allowing big opposing forwards to get into full flow before trying to bring them down. We got away with it today but on other occasions we will be punished more severely.

The opening exchanges were pretty even and didn't really give any indication of the eventual final score.  Thankfully, the opening score went to Siddal as the eventual man of the match Sam Smith proved once again what we already know ie give him a glimmer of an opening and he will finish. It wasn't long before runner up man of the match Sam Lovering got in on the act going over in the  opposite corner before taking the lead in the battle of the sams try scoring dual touching down an excellent kick by Opposition Man of the Match Jake Turner. Not to be out done Smithy again made another surging run  to touch down before fittingly getting the final Bulldogs try of the afternoon and in doing so completed his hat trick. Other try scorers on the day were Alex MacFarlane who also picked up the Top Tackler award and Tyler Dupree. Keelan Foster kicked three conversions.

Whilst not necessarily at their best at times the Bulldogs did play some decent stuff. Phillip Tatterstall again showed great determination going forward and there were some thumping tackles all over the pitch. When the boys drove the ball down the middle before moving it wide they looked good. When we played to the strengths of the team and as a team we looked good. When we lost a bit of discipline and began playing as individuals the opposition ran in two tries. I'm sure there is a lesson in there somewhere...

Second in the table as we head towards Cup week and the Easter break. I'm sure we'd all have taken that at the start of the season.

On to the cup next week...... Nice easy start. Crigglestone All Blacks away. Top of Division 1 and reigning Cup Holders..... Still, they'll be looking at our last few results with raised eyebrows. Depending on which Siddal turns up we could give them a real game.

I'll be away lying by the pool in my budgie smugglers reading Jackie Collins and sipping a piña colada. If somebody could text me the result I'd be very grateful......

Man of the Match - Sam Smith 30 points
Runner Up Man of the Match - Sam Lovering 20 points
Top Tackler - Alexander Macfarlane - 30 points
