Lancing United 3 - 2 Sidlesham
A disappointing day at the office
Sidlesham travelled along the coast to in form Lancing United on Saturday and came away disappointed with a defeat, only their 3rd of the season and putting a dent in their promotion chase.
With the wind and bumpy pitch not helping their game Sidlesham struggled to come to terms with the conditions and also with a strong Lancing side who are high in confidence of late. It was Sidlesham who threatened first with Tom Bayley linking with Callum Dowdell who in turn just failed to get on the end of Bayley's through ball. Next it was Lancing to attack with their lively striker causing the Sidlesham defence a problem with his unselfish running and work rate, not giving them time to settle and if it wasn't for the goalkeeper Henry Madgwick producing a good stop Lancing would of opened the scoring.
It wasn't long before they went ahead though, a free kick, wind assisted from deep out wide wasn't cleared by the Sidlesham defence leaving the Lancing striker to pounce and finish well. The wind was spoiling the game with players miss placing passes and the ball spending more time off the pitch than on it, although when Sidlesham got it down and played they caused problems for the home side. Tom Kelly having a chance to draw the sides level but pulled his shot wide.
Back a came Lancing and it was them that added to their tally when their forward raced onto a through ball and lifted the ball over the on rushing goalkeeper.
The second started better for Sidlesham with the wind on their backs they began to force the home side back and caused them problems with Dowdell and Bayley both having half chances saved and when Dowdell was through he was adjudged to be off side after finishing. Sidlesham got one back after John Phillips was fouled in the box and up stepped Bayley to make no mistake from the spot. It wasn't long before they were level as agian Bayley scored after twisting and turning his marker in the box and firing home the equaliser. This should of seen Sidlesham leave with at least a share of the points but another long ball into the box from a free kick caused the defence a problem they struggled to clear, Joe Leggatt was adjudged of leaving his foot high on the forward whilst clearing and the ref pointed to the spot and awarding a penalty. Although Madgwick went the right way and got a hand on the kick the ball hit the post and came back off him and rolled agonisingly over the line.
Sidlesham then threw everything at Lancing and although creating a few half chances they couldn't find an equaliser and ended up coming away empty handed.
Sidlesham are back on their travels again on Saturday with an away game a Westfield in the league, this their second away game of five coming up this month.
