Sidmouth Girls training the difference
Sidmouth opened the batting through Lotte Maynard & Alice Neumegen. This was the first time the girls had represented the club but they quickly got 19 runs. A run out did not halt progress as they went on to score 27.
Next, Lucy Gosling & Emma Seward carried on with the good form from last week and added another 22. Neve Knight & Cerian Lines played a sensible innings, only running when runs could be made and relying on wides from the opposition. This made them the top Sidmouth scorers getting 25 valuable runs without loss. Finally Ellie Gosling & Helen Shelly came to the crease. Unfortunately Ellie hit her own stumps. This did not upset her. She proceeded to smack the ball all around the ground. Only a moist outfield stopped a couple of fours but the girls made two runs on several occasions when other players might have only taken one run.
Helen in particular bravely stood up to some fast bowling from Ottery player Bernie.
Sidmouth's total of 177 was good but gettable. The team were told to keep the bowling tight and back up at all times. Ottery had a talented but raw batting line up.
Ellie Gosling took her first wicket clean bowling the Ottery opening pair.
Emma showed great progress with intelligent fielding. I was particularly impressed with her backing up her team mates.
Lucy from Ottery whilst only 8 looks a fantastic player for the future and was supported by Darcie. The pair put on 29. Emma took another wicket.
Ottery's 3rd pair came in and struck several boundaries. The outfield had dried and Sidmouth started to regret batting first.. But again another wicket was taken this time by Cerian Lines.
Ottery had overtaken the Sidmouth total but 3 wickets had cost them 15 runs. However Ottery felt confident the final pair would secure a win. However a tight over from Lucy Gosling & a Double wicket maiden from Helen Shelley secured a great win for The Seagulls. Sidmouth 177-3 Ottery 171-5.
Congratulations girls on your first win.
Special congratulations to Helen, Alice, Lotte & Ellie on their Sidmouth debuts.
