County class to the fore
Devon trio shine in Sidmouth win
COUNTY players at three different age groups were key elements of Sidmouth's eight-wicket win over Four Oaks Saints from Sutton Coldfield.
After choosing to bat first the Midlands side surrendered a number of wickets to Devon under 14 player Henry Gater, who took 7-52 with his off-spin in an all-out total of 187.
After Joel Tratt was lbw for 13 in the reply Devon over 60s batsman Tom Overthrow and full county cap Josh Bess compiled a 130-run stand for the second wicket, broken when one run was needed for victory.
Overthrow was 75 not out and Bess 65.
The full toss was Gater's most lethal ball, accounting for three of his victims. A long hop induced a catch on the boundary for Graham Pidgeon who had already pouched one of the mis-hit full tosses.
All but one catch that the Saints offered was snaffled to cause the fall of nine wickets.
The best were in the slips off opening bowlers Scott Todd and Andy Green. Tratt, who had put down one difficult chance, atoned by holding a nick off Green one-handed with a dive to his right while Overthrow took a firm edge at second slip off Todd.
Lee Clayden and Tom Chaplin put in tidy spells of bowling without reward.
