The Cobbydalers travelled to Gillford Park for a re-arranged game, in what was to be a "dead" weekend for both sides who were not involved in this season's FA Cup competition. Carlisle City have had a Jekyll and Hyde start to the season losing the openeing fixture 4-0 at Chadderton, but winning by the same score at home to Nelson midweek.
With Danny Forrest and Mark Trueman injured the Cobbydalers were also without Matty Moses who was declared unfit for the kick off. Aaron Davis a scorer as substitute at Blackpool replaced Moses and Josh Eastwood was on the bench having just returned from holiday.
The football from both sides was brisk in the opening minutes with United having the advantage of the wind, went close when Jordan Atkinson saw his shot parried by Callum Jakovlevs before Aaron Davis cleared the danger.
Ten minutes into the game Joe Gaughan saw a right foot effort deflected wide. Arley Barnes was dominant in the midfield spreading the ball wide with creativity. His left foot volley was charged down.
Joe Gaughan was causing the home defence problems. Barnes chipped a free kick over the home defence to Gaughan whose shot was cleared for a corner. The ball was passed to Gaughan who slipped passed two men but his shot was blocked.
Mark Everingham looked very comfotable at left back. His through ball set up Nicky McNally who saw his volley just clear the bar.
The Cobbydalers took the lead on the stroke of half time when 17 year old keeper Lewis Casson failed to clear a back pass and SULTAN scored the opener.
Gaughan was narrowly wide again at the start of the second half, and after a period of possession Barnes had an effort deflected for a corner.
A rare sorte upfield by City was intercepted superbly by Kaine. Midway through the half a fantastic move involving Hancock, Daivis, Sultan and Goughan ended with the latter shooting wide. Minutes later Barnes chipped a free kick over the defensive wall. Gaughan had a one on one with the young keeper who spread himself to keep City in the game. Hancock saw an effort strike the far post and rebound to safty.
In another rare break Peter Allison freed Brady Wiser who shot narrowly wide. Barnes and Gaughan both shot over as the Cobbydalers saught a second, but in the dying minutes the hosts almots equalised. Bradbury had crossed from the right and substitute Ben Davidson shot marginally over. Phew!
Danny Forrest summmed up the game, "we created so many chances and only scored one. We won because our defensive play was very solid, where both Mark Everingham and Aaron Davis looked composed. Neadless to say Illingworth and Kaine were dominant. The goals are bound to come. I was delighted with Mateusz Thomaz, who had his best game to date, and pleased also with Luke Baldwin who almost scored in stoppage time".
