Former Skelmersdale United coach Andy Paxton will take charge of Prescot Cables for the first time on Saturday in the Emirates FA Cup after being named as the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League club's new manager.

The former Burnley, Clitheroe, Prescot Cables, Southport and Skem keeper left Stormy Corner to succeed Neil Prince at Valerie Park after working for more than five years alongside Skem boss Tommy Lawson.

Prince, who took over last summer, departed on Sunday after a third defeat of the new season at the hands of Glossop North End left Cables propping up the fledgling First Division North table.

Prescot lost 4-0 at home in Prince's last game in charge and Paxton, pictured, will get an early chance to lift spirits and take revenge for his predecessor when he takes his new charges to the Arthur Goldthorpe Stadium in the preliminary round.

Paxton, who enjoyed a reputation as a penalty save specialist and played in goal for Lawson at Prescot when the club won promotion into the EVO-STIK NPL from the North West Counties, will want to make an immediate impact.

As well as the Glossop defeat, a 6-0 midweek reverse at home to Witton Albion and 4-1 loss on the opening day at Clitheroe, Cables went down to an 8-0 drubbing at Trafford on Tuesday.

The new Prescot manager has the experience to quickly turn around the club's fortunes. At Skem he helped Lawson win the First Division North title and Liverpool Senior Cup.

In a statement released on Monday night confirming his appointment, club officials said he would be assisted by Steve Pilling who won two cups while gaining five years of managerial experience at Atherton Collieries.
