By Simon Driscoll
After a run of tough games on the road, Skelmersdale United resumed hosting duties with a visit from bottom side Goole AFC but were handed a 2-1 loss with both sides ending the game with ten men.
Goole saw captain Danny South dismissed and took the lead through Scott Smith in the space of four minutes before half time, Christopher Walton doubled the lead on the hour with Josh Wardle cutting the gap minutes later for United who saw captain Liam Hollett dismissed late on. Dave Powell handed instant debuts to Ryan Botell and Tunde Owolabi while Callum Roberts returned in goal for United. Goole came close to taking the lead inside the opening minutes as Derry Robson put Scott Smith in on goal with the resulting shot creeping achingly past the post.
United's first chance came as Mwiya Malumo collected an attacking header from Liam Hollett and advanced on goal but as he looked to shoot, 'keeper Ben Saynor saved at his feet. Malumo turned provider minutes later as he picked out Scott Bakkor with a header but the United striker could only drag the ball wide of the post. Saynor was forced into a strong punch after Tom Molyneux swung in a dangerous free-kick before he was beaten by a clever United attack that saw Bakkor head over him after connecting to a long aerial pass from Hollett, his blushes were spared by a superb goal-line clearance from Sam Colbear.
The resulting corner saw Molyneux find Jack Lenehan on the edge of the area who drew a low stop from Saynor. Goole's response was a dangerous inswinging free-kick which forced Callum Roberts into a punch before he collected the ball under pressure. Goole continued to threaten with an aerial pass from Steven Jeff finding Terry Barwick who hit a shot just past the post. United tried their luck with a nice passing play as Lenehan found Jordan Darr in space, the winger drawing a strong diving stop from Saynor.
The visitors suffered a blow on 41 minutes, captain Danny South chased a long pass which was claimed by Hollett who in trying to protect the ball went down, South attempted to claim the ball with the referee allowing the battle to continue before other players stopped the game with the result being a dismissal for South. At the other end, a clever combination between Darr and Tunde Owolabi saw Lenehan force a double stop from Saynor before Owolabi did the same from the next attack after a passback from Colbear. For all of their chances, United were to go into the interval behind as a cross from Jeff found the head of Smith who headed past Roberts for 1-0. The last action of the half saw a Bakkor flick-on caught by Saynor.
United came close to drawing level from the restart as Owolabi benefitted from a defensive mistake and forced a clever block which deflected past the post. Seconds later, United had the ball in the net as Malumo connected to Molyneux's cross to head past Saynor but the joy was curtailed as the effort was chalked off due an apparent offside and they continued to threaten with Phil Mooney forcing a diving stop after a clever wing run.
Mooney turned provided on the hour mark as he picked out Malumo who headed an effort just over the bar, Goole's response proved to be a costly one for United though as the visitors doubled their lead, substitute Bryan Dakouri finding Smith in space who laid off for Christopher Walton to fire in for 2-0. United attempted to reduce the deficit with Molyneux swinging a dangerous cross to the back post which drew a good save from Saynor who then denied a close-range effort from Malumo. The pressure on the Goole defence soon paid off as a looping cross from substitute Bevan Burey found Bakkor at the far post who headed on for Josh Wardle to tap past Saynor for 2-1.
The visitors's lead remained under threat with Darr forcing a save from close range before substitute George Withe sent a shot past the post. United were reduced to ten men with four minutes left of the 90 as after a coming together with substitute Declan Howe, captain Hollett was given his marching orders for striking the Goole forward. The final whistle sounding minutes later was greeted with joy for the visitors as they claimed only their second win of the season while United's wait for a win went on.
