Bakkor Belter Ends United Losing Run
CLITHEROE 2 SKELMERSDALE UNITED 2
By Simon Driscoll
After Tuesday's defeat to Bamber Bridge in their final home game, Skelmersdale United ended the season with a 2-2 draw away to Clitheroe.
United led inside 16 minutes with Liam Davies' strike before a brace either side of the interval from Ross Dent put the hosts ahead, a superb leveller from Scott Bakkor on 76 minutes ensured a share of the points.
Dave Powell made two changes from midweek with Chris Cheetham and Jack Lenehan coming in for Deklan Hill and Callum Roberts with Roberts named on the bench.
Clitheroe went closest to the afternoon's first chance as Robbie Bromley put Kurt Willoughby in on goal but clever defending from Phil Mooney quelled the danger. The first chance did go to the hosts as a quick counter saw Bromley finding Willoughby again but this time he forced a strong stop from Chris Cheetham.
Cheetham was beaten a few minutes later as Ross Dent was put through on goal and chipped the ball towards goal but his effort went wide of the target. The miss was to be a costly one as United opened the scoring within a minute, Scott Bakkor laying off for Liam Davies who fired past Chris Thompson for 1-0 after 16 minutes.
United were unlucky not to double the lead as a number of passes after a corner saw Mooney heading forward for Mike Roddy who chested the ball narrowly past the post. Clitheroe suffered a blow on 37 minutes as Joe Mitchell was sent off for an off the ball offence on Jack Fleming and the ten men soon drew level as a short backpass from Mooney allowed Dent to slot past Cheetham for 1-1 with 40 minutes on the clock.
Clitheroe 'keeper Thompson was kept busy before the interval, blocking James Barrigan's effort before Mike Roddy forced a stop from just inside the area. He also tipped a shot from Davies past the post minutes later and saved a curling shot from Barrigan. The final chance of the half came in the final seconds as Bakkor sent an effort narrowly past the front post.
Clitheroe came close to going ahead within three minutes of the restart as Stephen Rigby found Willoughby on the left wing who forced an acrobatic save from Cheetham with Fleming clearing off the line. The hosts went ahead just before the hour mark as Willoughby's whipped cross saw a diving header from Dent sail past Cheetham at the near post for 2-1.
A clever flick forward from Davies put Bakkor in on goal with a superb point blank save from Thompson denying him with both Barrigan and Jack Lenehan unable to fire in the rebound. Mike Roddy hit over from distance before United levelled in style, a cross field pass from Davies found Bakkor in space on the left and he cut inside before sweeping a superb effort over Thompson into the top corner for 2-2.
Both sides pushed for the winner with substitute Tunde Owolabi firing over for United before fellow sub Bevan Burey drew a low save from Thompson. Clitheroe's response was a shot past the post from Willoughby with sub Liam Hollett forcing a stunning fingertip save by Thompson from long range. The final whistle saw both sides share the points with United ending the season on a positive after a run of defeats.
