Skipton 24 v Roundhegians 22
Next to bottom versus fifth in the league, on paper this was a game Skipton should have expected to win but it does always happen that way.
Skipton were missing captain Matthew Speres through injury, captaining the side for this game was Jonathan Richards.
After five minutes the Roundhegians prop collected the ball and sprinted 20 yards to score out wide, the conversion was successful 0-7. Skipton were possibly the better side but they were not getting the breaks and a converted penalty to Roundhegians made it 0-10. Skipton thought they were in the game when pressure on the Roundhegians line saw scrum half Kevin Bottomley go over only to knock on over the line, no score. Roundhegians then went further ahead with another penalty 0-13.
The second half saw Skipton score two quick penalties, Alex Naylor converting 6-13. Roundhegians then scored two penalties 6-19. Skipton did not show any signs of panic and Alex Naylor kicked another penalty, 9-19. Full back Andrew Nicholson chipped a neat kick over the opposition back line for Alex Naylor to collect and score out wide, the conversion was missed 14-19. With fifteen minutes left Roundhegians converted another penalty 14-22. Eight minutes to go and Alex Naylor kicked yet another penalty 17-22. The game was now virtually over and a scrum won by Skipton saw Patrick Murray pick up and score a well taken try close to the posts, the try was awarded by the referee but was disputed by all the Roundhegians players and travelling supporters, Alex Naylor converted to make the final score 24-22. Not a great game from Skipton but they came through in the end to snatch victory.
Again good performances from veteran scrum half Bottomley and fly half Alex Naylor with back row men Matty Wilson and (Trevor) Matthew Boatwright playing very well.
Two matches left, this week away to West Leeds, 7th May home to Yarnbury.
