West Hull v Skirlaugh

by Rich Ellis

The start of the season is upon us and our first game is away to West Hull.
With the exception of Luke Armstrong who is ill ( get well mate) we have a full turn out of players who are just itching to get started , as well as some very excited coach’s, LOL.

The game started at a ferocious rate with some good running and exceptional tackling by both teams, a typical Skirlaugh Vs West Hull encounter.
With the likes of Ben Ellis and Ben McNamara organising the boys and sorting the plays out, we had some good running from Josh Berndtson, Riley Wilson, and Alfie Shultz up the middle. Bradley Garrod and Tom Danby linking up just slightly wider, but with all the ground we were making West Hull were making the same on us. Defensively we held our line very well with some great tackling all around the field, to mention a few Jay Smallwood, Tom Danby and Tyler Mellors both did really well, especially Tyler Mellor how caught some tricky high balls with ease.
With the score still being nil Chatty made some subs, the boys settled well to the changes George Cochran and Kai Fowler taking the ball forward, from one of Kai Fowlers runs near the line the ball eventually finds its way to Tom Danby who battled his way forward and crossing the line for the first try of the game he followed that up with converting his kick. This was soon followed by the half time whistle sounding, and a time for the parents to take a breath.

Second half started much the same way as the first, fast and hard, but after a short time and some good running, Bradley Garrod found his way to the try line and scored a good try this was just as Chatty had asked, not being a kicker Bradley Garrod passed this on to Ben Ellis who was playing against his old team mate’s, he kicked the ball in the centre of the post’s to make the score 12. As West Hull never gave up and managed to score two tries themselves but only managed to convert one kick this made a very tense final quarter.
With the ball going back and forth the boys kept their nerve and produced some really good plays with Keiron Boyd running well from deep, Jacob Chatwin being one of the smaller boys made an exceptional tackle on one of West Hulls bigger lads and Jacob stopped him in his tracks. With the end coming closer and the nails gone the boys fought their way up the field and Tyler Mellors cross the line with a well deserved try, this was converted by Ben McNamara to clinch the game with the final whistle being blown the game finished 18 – 10 to Skirlaugh.

A great game by the boys; let’s have more to come, well done from all the parents.
