Martin Bromwich has announced his retirement ahead of Saturday’s final game of the season at home to AFC Sudbury.

The 37 year old defender or midfielder recently made his 500th appearance for the club, having arrived at the Lane in October 2002 from neighbours Ely City.

During his thirteen years at the Lane, Bromwich has been a regular in the squad, and was part of the side which won the 2007/08 Eastern Counties League title, helping the club gain promotion to the Southern League. He has also twice been named player of the season.

Martin posted on the club’s forum:

I'm sorry to disappoint you all, but Saturday is definitely going to be my last game. It's not a decision I have made on a whim or taken lightly, but something I had in mind even before this season started. It never has been about something like reaching a target of games played - I didn't have a clue that I was anywhere near 500 games - but more about when I felt the time was right.........And that time is sadly now.

I know I still have the ability to play at this level of football but it's not just about that. I have been playing football for pretty much thirty years now and it was always going to take its toll at some point. Over the past few seasons I have struggled a bit mentally or physically at different times, but towards the end of last season and definitely this season I have found that both have appeared in tandem to an extent.
On the physical side I have had a few more issues with my back this year, which is obviously something I need to take care of, having regularly woken up the next morning after games feeling like I had been run over rather than having the odd little niggle, and it is taking me notably longer to recover.
On the mental side, if I am completely honest, I have lost my "buzz" for playing a little bit. I still enjoy casually strolling around the pitch and there aren't many things more satisfying than nutmegging a striker or fooling them with my one and only trick, but I just don't seem to feel the same excitement on the day of the game as I used to, and to me when that starts to happen you know something isn't right.

In summary.......I am knackered!

I've had an amazing thirteen years at the club, picking up a lot of great memories along the way, and am very proud to have played over 500 games. I have played for some very good managers and with some excellent players, made some great friends on and off the pitch (For which I will be eternally grateful) and will undoubtedly miss everything about the club, but I will definitely come along to watch and see everyone when I can.

I could go on and on but I'm starting to well up so I will end by saying that it's been an absolute pleasure to play in front of the supporters that have been watching throughout my time here, I hope I can put in one last decent performance for you on Saturday and that we can end the season on a high note.

The club would like to thank Martin for his commitment to the club over the last thirteen years, and wish him all the best for his future.
