Kane Munday, the U18’s goalkeeper, has been forced to retire at the age of seventeen after suffering with the symptom sciatica.

Sciatica is a nerve disease that gives pain in movement around the joints and after extensive physio and advice from specialists, Munday has been forced to retire from football for the foreseeable future.

Speaking to STRU18sInteractive, Kane explained the problems that he has been through and his enforced decision.
“The physio’s and doctors have been monitoring my pain for some time now and after seeing the specialist last week, I was told that if I do not want to have trouble even walking when I’m older, then I have to take an extensive break from sporting activities - This includes my football and of course then my Under 18’s career. I’m gutted, completely gutted but the gaffa reminds us all that there is more to our life than football and this is one of the cases where my future is important because I don’t want to affect my chances of being able to walk unaided when I am older.”

Manager Chris Gibson had this to say on the news
“When Kano messaged me to talk, I knew instantly that something was up. He’s one of those lads that are open and honest. I knew it was going to be something big he had to tell me. When he told me it was that he had to force retirement from competitive football, I really did sink. Kane has been such a great lad over the last five years I have known him and had him within the youth setup. I can sympathise with Kane as I had a career affecting injury that dashed a lot of dreams for me. Kane has got really it this year and his technical ability as a goalkeeper is excellent, but it’s his personal image that’s most impressive. He is open, honest, hardworking and committed. He has sat on the bench for us and always made himself available when called upon. As he became a senior, we hoped to see more of him and he was starting to feel injury free again and now this had gutted him. We are hoping to keep him as involved as we can, but overall it’s such a shame for us to lose him and for what he now sacrifices.
He has been a big part of the journey that the Under 18’s have taken on their progression and I hope he remembers it as fond times.”

Kane talks exclusively to STRU18sInteractive in a video interview that will be able to be viewed next week along with other content added to the Youth team’s social media sites.
