Alan Boon was an immensely popular figure in non-league football and the Isthmian (Ryman) League in particular, having been involved with Staines Town from the time that they joined the League in 1973. He served on the League’s Board of Directors for many years and was elected as an Honorary Vice-President in 2009 for his service and commitment to the League over many years, following his club’s promotion to the Football Conference. Alan owned Boon Building Services Litd which did a great deal of electrical work for clubs at all levels including Chelsea and readily gave advice on floodlighting and other matters. The company invested heavily in substantial improvements to Staines' home ground at Wheatsheaf Park, a lasting monument to Alan. League Chairman Alan Turvey said: "I was a good friend of Alan and he will be missed. At the end of last season Alan spoke with me and said that he would like to do something with the League and we discussed some form of sponsorship. Tragically Alan passed away before anything could be finally agreed. On discussing this matter with Alan’s son Matthew, the Managing Director of the company, daughters Corrine and Michelle, all were happy to respect Alan’s wish and support the League, and the sponsorship of the League Cup is the result." Matthew Boon commented: “We are delighted to be able to respect Dad’s wish and continue the association with the League by way of the sponsorship of the League Cup.”
