Steve Fallon hopes he can unearth some more gems from the lower leagues after a summer of change at Soham

The Greens boss has been busy rebuilding the side following a number of departures from the squad which narrowly missed out on a place in Ryman League, North Division play-offs last season.
Bringing experienced players in from the level above has proved difficult, with Fallon instead looking at the Thurlow Nunn League and Kershaw League, Premier Division for new recruits.
Last season’s top scorer, Luke Stanley, is one of several players Fallon has brought up and developed, and he aims to continue that trend.
“We’ve got to try and find some from the lower leagues,” said Fallon. “It’s a lot to do with money and wanting to play with their mates, and it’s all these old scenarios. We’ve got to try it, but it’s not easy. They take a while to step up and blend into it, but we’ve got to find them. It’s a steady build and we’re working hard on it. We still might get a couple back who have moved on if things don’t work out, so we’ll just have to see.”

Soham were dealt a blow early in the summer with the news long-serving midfielder Martin Simpson would have to retire due to a back injury. Chris Lindsay and Antonio Murray have also left for Australia, while several others have moved to other clubs in the area. Buster Harradine, who is another one Fallon spotted in the Kershaw League, has made the step up to Southern League, Premier Division side Cambridge City, while Enol Ordonez and Ben Sawyer have joined Histon
Fallon’s recruitment drive has seen him bring in Marcus Hall after he impressed for Kershaw League side Great Shelford last season.
Goalkeeper Elliott Anderson and defender Alex Luque have signed up as well, while Fallon is also looking to players from Soham’s reserve and youth teams. The likes of Kojo Afori, Mason Newman and Matt Simpson have all been given opportunities during pre-season and while the friendly matches did not yield a victory, Fallon insists the side will be ready for Saturday’s North Division opener at home to Heybridge Swifts.
“We’ve lost a lot of players from last year for one reason or another,” said Fallon. “We’ve got a few youth team players who have come through from last year, we’ve got a few from the reserves and we’ve got a few people in. We’ve not had the best of pre-seasons – we know that – but we’re working towards that first game of the season and it’s all about that.”
