Heybridge suffered an opening day defeat with the hosts breaching the defence three times

leaving Swifts frustrated that the performance didn't match some in pre season.

Soham took a 17th minute lead when Joey Abbs broke through and beat Sambridge in the box but the lead only lasted two minutes as Springett whipped over a free kick from the left for Heybridge which Soham keeper Templeman failed to hold, Ricky Spriggs capitalised from close range to make no mistake with the leveller.
The first half remained quite even but Heybridge did have to survive a couple of further first half scares as Abbs sent over a cross on 26 minutes that sneaked through the defence before Artemi cleared before Ryan Sharman had chance to shoot.
Luke Stanley was the danger man all day long for Soham and should have scored just after the half hour when he met a Hall cross at the edge of the six yard box but put his effort narrowly wide.
Stanley again went close on 38 minutes but this time the legs of Swifts keeper Sambridge denied glory, Springett backed him up with a big clearance that went skyward, Sambridge remained alert as the ball descended onto the roof of his net for a corner.
Heybridge had noticed the Soham keeper could potentially be a weakness in his holding onto the ball in the opening half and caused a goalmouth mini scramble just before the break, Richmond saw his shot blocked just feet from the line, Hunt side footed wide from the rebound.
A goal just before the break can hurt any side and did so to Heybridge as Soham regained the lead on 43 minutes, Luke Stanley broke clear from a free kick and was able to guide the ball past Sambridge with ease as Soham took a 2-1 lead into the break.
2-1 was so nearly 3-1 inside two minutes of the restart as a 35 yarder from Marcus Hall curled inches over.

Tom Holdstock rose highest to win a 61st minute header which needed an acrobatic save from Templeman to keep out the ball as Heybridge showed again they were capable of scoring but it was in defence they wobbled and a minute later Soham sub Dan Brown skipped through the middle past Steve Good and Springett and continued into the box attempting to round the keeper but Sambridge held firm and made a crucial save as he also did on 64 minutes when he got down to deny a long range effort from Abbs and the follow up by Sharman.
Nine minutes from time Barham who had come on for Springett for Heybridge ended a long run with a shot that Soham blocked, Billy Hunt turned the rebound straight at Joe Templeman as both teams began to tire. All hope of a comeback began to fade in the final six minutes when Dan Brown again beat Good, Sambridge saved and Sub Matt Simpson scooped the ball over from close range in dismay. Soham sealed the three points in stoppage time when Joey Abbs netted again.
