Great Wakering 1 Soham Town Rangers 1
A second half injury time goal gave Soham their fourth consecutive away draw as they came from behind to share the points at Great Wakering Rovers.
Rangers gave a debut to recent signing Will Fordham, whilst Denny Escorcio made his first start of the season.
There was little between the two sides throughout in terms of possession, but Wakering may feel they should have taken all three points with the amount of good chances they had. In the opening minute, Nobbs got round the back of the Soham defence, narrowly placing a long freekick over at the near post. After this Cobb twice, Nobbs and Warner all had opportunities, whilst a well-placed Austin denied Gorbell on his Own Goal line. Midway through the half Godwin-Green made the first meaning save of the match, pushing Cotton’s freekick over his bar with two hands. With eight minutes of the first half remaining, Rovers won a series of corners with McGeorge twice blocking efforts on his line, while Bircham denying Gorbell before Bright fired over from the follow-up.
The second period began with Nobbs driving an effort wide from distance, before Austin diverted Warner’s freekick just wide of his near post. Wakering broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when Bradley Nobbs received the ball on the edge of the area, before powerfully firing a shot across goal and wide of Bircham. Denny Escorcio could have pulled one back for Soham moments later, but after cutting in from the right placed wide of the far post; this was the attacker’s last action as he was then replaced by Matt Robinson. Simpson put narrowly wide following good build up play down the left from Cobb and Gammon, before up the other end, Curran got between the two centre halves to receive a long through ball, but after getting into the box, and with only Bircham to beat fired wide under pressure from Austin. With ten minutes remaining, the visitors made a tactic change bringing on Andy Coleman for Simon Flanz as Soham started to increase the pressure. Godwin-Green made a low near post save to thwart Cobb, before Cotton had two efforts kept out by the keeper. From the latter, Wakering quickly broke up field, only for Bircham to deny sub Dewberry in a one-on-one situation. However, in the first minute of injury time, Soham ensured they left Burroughs Park with a draw; Cotton’s left sided corner wasn’t cleared with the ball eventually falling to Tom Liberatore, with the defender converting from close range for his first goal of the season.
