Thamesmead Town 4 Soham Town Rangers 0
Thamesmead recorded a League double over Soham, with a comfortable 4-0 home, having been three up at the break.
Having come so close to beating third placed Needham Market at home last weekend, only to be denied by a late winner, the visitors kept an unchanged side for the trip to Bayliss Avenue.
Having started the game, Thamesmead made the perfect start opening the scoring in the third minute. Fairweather-Johnson collected a misplaced ball in midfield, taking it into the Soham area where his shot was deflected wide of the far post, from which Lea Dawson fired a flicked on corner high into the roof of the net. Slowly Soham started to have the better of the possession and chances but were unable to get back into the game as Furnell and Seymour-Shove had a couple of half chances, Bromwich placed narrowly wide of the far post from all of 35-yards and Danny Moore, who moments later was replaced after suffering a facial injury in the incident, blocked a powerful goal bound Cobb strike from the edge of the area. Fairweather-Johnson then placed across goal and narrowly over the bar before ‘Mead made the visitors pay for their missed chances with two goals in as many minutes. Joseph Afusi doubled the hosts’ lead in the 39th minute when his low long range shot squirmed under Bircham and in at the near post, before Daniel Kerrigan made it three two minutes later as he converted Johnson’s pass. Seymour-Shove could have pulled a goal back in injury time, but after getting on the end of Simpson’s throughball, saw his shot blocked by the legs of Mott, with only the keeper to beat.
Both sides created chances after the interval, but nothing to really test the opposition keepers who easily held strikes from Furnell and Dawson, who also placed wide from the edge of the area. Cotton put over from a freekick before Bircham pushed over a shot from Cable in a one-on-one situation. With less than a quarter of the match remaining, both sides made all their changes. Seymour-Shove twice fired into the side netting after getting into the box whilst Cable had a goal disallowed for offside. However as the game entered injury time, Thamesmead scored their fourth when Butler’s long throw was flicked on into the path of Afusi, who held off a challenge from substitute Davis to turn and fire in low at the near post to give the hosts’ their first win in five games.
