Having narrowly lost at Tilbury during the week, the Greens made two changes to the side with David Cobb and debutant Brady Stone coming into the side at the expense of Denny Escorcio and Andy Coleman, against an Ambers’ team who were under new management since their last game.
It was a quick start to the match with both sides having their share of the possession. Simpson created the first clear opportunity at goal after twelve minutes but placed over from close range before shortly after, Ogbonna chased down a ball into the area, however after getting between Williamson and one off his defenders, fired across an open goal and wide. The host’s real effort came midway through the half, but Brennan fired high at Jordan, before Carter headed Cotton’s corner at the keeper and Hutchinson rattled the bar from outside the area. Just before the interval, Brennan placed just wide and Simpson headed behind from Cobb’s diagonal ball into the area.
Soham came out the better side after the interval, enjoying the majority of the play but were unable to find the net with Williamson in fine form. His first involvement came five minutes after the break when he came off his line to deny Furnell at full stretch, whilst moments later making a double block to keep out Ogbonna and Carter. The latter also looped a header over the bar whilst also firing straight at the keeper. Midway through the half, Ogbonna placed Stone’s pass into the side netting, before the visitors were reduced to ten men when Scott Carter was sent off for handling Cotton’s delivery into the area; this was the midfielder’s second caution of the game having been booked in the first half for the same offence, but this time in the middle of the field. Despite being a man down, the Greens continued to press forward with Cotton and Ogbonna also being denied by Williamson. Ten minutes before the end, Hutchinson setup Brennan, who fired wide, whilst up the other end Cobb and Simpson again came close. However, Cheshunt nearly nicked all three points as the game entered injury time when Hutchinson ran onto a throughball from midfield, delivering it to the back post to McDonald, but with an open goal in front of him the substitute headed over.
