Soham Record First Away Win
Matt Allan’s early goal gave Soham their first away victory of the season winning 1-0 at Romford.
The Greens made three changes to the side which had lost away at Westfields in the FA Cup replay on Wednesday as Ashley Bankole, captain Lewis Endacott and manager Rob Mason, making his first start of the season, came into the starting eleven.
Within the opening minute Romford had a good opportunity to open the scoring when Nzengo collected a quickly taken Giwa throw, however after making his way into the area was denied by Pope at his near posts. The hosts also won a couple of early corners, and it was from the clearance from one of these that Soham took the lead when confusion between Gooch and Atkinson as they attempted to deal with Clayton’s ball up-field allowed Matt Allan to collect the loose ball, advance into the area and score into an empty net after only three minutes. The visitors continued to have the better of the attacking play and twenty minutes into the half should have doubled the lead however Gooch made a fine low save to deny Mason from Carden’s right sided ball. The game started to even out as Dicks delivered an angled freekick across the face of gaol , Clarke fired low at Pope from distance before Gooch made a double save to deny Carden.
The second half started in the same manner as the first have finished with Giwa firing wide with an early effort before Allan twice put behind. The Greens came close again midway through the half to doubling their advantage when following a good run down the right, Bankole played in Allan whose shot came back off the far post with Mason following up to fire wide, before a well-timed Giwa tackle moments later denied Clayton. Both sides made changes with Soham introducing new signing Gary Cohen who was straight into the action with the sub twice being thwarted within minutes of coming on. With ten minutes remaining, following a quick ball up field, Mvemba made his way past Bankole to deliver the ball into the area where Reynolds dipped over, with Carden doing the same with the next attack shortly after. Five minutes later, Cohen held his run to collect Clayton’s ball out wide where he progressed into the area and curled a shot narrowly wide of the far post. Romford had two late opportunities within stoppage time to score an equaliser however subs Mvemba heading wide before Jeakins was kept out at the near post by Pope, with Soham recording their first clean sheet and away points of the season.
