Soham Win At Brentwood
Soham ended a run of back to back defeats with a comfortable 3-1 win away to Brentwood Town.
For their final midweek fixture of the season, the Greens made two changes to the side which suffered a late defeat at home to promotion chasing Bowers and Pitsea on Saturday as Dan Buddle and Callum Russell returned in place of Craig Gillies and the suspended Jack Mochalski.
This was the third meeting of the season between the two sides with the Essex side winning the previous two encounters at the Lane in the League and League Cup.
Soham enjoyed the better of the attacking play for the majority of the game, however clear chances at either end were limited in the opening stages as Kaye and Robson placed low shots at the opposition keeper, Russell put wide at the near post with the visitors also having a number of other efforts well over the bar. Soham took the lead in the 31st minute when Joe Carden came in at the back post to head home Russell’s left sided delivery. The visitors had opportunities to further increase their advantage before the break, however Mulready’s header hit the underside of the bar before bouncing in front of the line, whilst Endacott and Carden had goal bound shots blocked and Carden fired an angled shot across the face of goal.
Soham continued having the better of the second halves’ play, although failed to really test Brown early on. Both sides made changes before the visitors doubled their lead midway through the half when Carden was given plenty of room to make his way down the left to deliver the ball across the area for Lewis Clayton to score at the back post at the second attempt. Soham continued to press forward as Brown tipped over a shot from distance, whilst up the other end Cohen headed Mitchell’s angled shot over Pope off his own line. Clayton and Connor had further chances before Soham scored a third with three minutes remaining after Jon Kaye’s freekick had hit the base of the wall, the midfielder continued his run into the area to retrieve the ball, turning inside a couple of players to fire a low shot into the bottom corner. The visitors were denied a clean sheet as the game entered stoppage time as incoming substitute Jack Mitchell headed in Rider’s deep cross from the left, although Soham had opportunities to restore their three goal lead in injury time, however Brown made another fine save pushing Kaye’s angled shot over, before Gillies and Conway put wide.
