Soham Comfortably Win At Home To Hertford Town
Soham returned to winning ways with a comfortable 5-0 home win against Hertford Town.
Following the defeat away to Maldon and Tiptree last Saturday, the Greens made two changes to the starting eleven as Marcus Hall and Harry Norman returned, whilst recent signing Sam Mulready was named amongst the substitutes.
Rain on the build up to the game made conditions difficult however it was the hosts that made the quicker start as Hall had an early effort blocked and Gillies placed wide before Soham opened the scoring in the fifteenth minute as Joe Carden collected the ball from the left, laying it off to Hall, whose shot was pushed away by a diving Mann, with Carden following up to convert. The Greens continued to push forward, with Hall firing narrowly over from distance, before doubling the advantage in the 28th minute, when captain Callum Russell received Clayton’s ball just outside the area to curl his shot wide of Mann, who could just stand and watch. Moments later, Carden dipped a shot just wide before Hertford had their first meaningful efforts however after receiving balls into the area, Cole and Osei were denied by Pope, with Soham further increasing their lead in the 37th minute when Marcus Hall powerfully headed Carden’s cross wide of Mann at the near post.
The visitors created more attacks in the opening stages of the second half, and ten minutes in, Pope came rushing from his area to halt Lutaaya’s run, for which the keeper was shown a yellow card. Light placed the resultant freekick low at Pope, with the keeper also making a routine save to keep out Lutaaya’s curling effort moments later. But a further two goals for the hosts inside eight minutes ensured the win; the fourth goal came on the hour as Carden was released down the right, with the attacker delivering the ball into the middle of the penalty area, where Craig Gillies turned to place low into the bottom corner. Carden was again involved with the fifth goal eight minutes later, when he played another ball into the area from the right, for the incoming Russell to score his second of the match. As the game progressed, both sides made changes with the hosts coming close to scoring a sixth just before the final whistle, however after collecting Mann’s clearance, Gillies placed wide before Russell came close to his hat-trick but fired across goal and narrowly wide of the far post.
The win sees Soham climb above Hertford in the table as well as claiming a League double over their visitors.
