Soham End Season With Defeat
Soham finished the 2017/18 season with a 2-1 defeat away to promotion chasing Heybridge Swifts.
Following the midweek win away at Brentwood Town, the Greens named an unchanged starting eleven although Jack Mochalski and Harry Norman returned from suspension to be named amongst the substitutes to face a Swifts side which still had an outside chance of automatic promotion.
This was the second meeting between the two sides this month, with Heybridge securing a 3-0 win at the Lane.
Heybridge started the game quickly dominating large parts of the opening play. After creating a number of early attacks, Pope made an early save to deny Luque one-on-one with the attacker following up to place over, with the keeper making another save after quarter of an hour pushing away a long throw from on his own goal line. Midway through the half, the hosts opened the scoring, when following another long throw, Endacott cleared Baker’s header off his own line, with the ball falling to Luke Callander who drove his shot into the bottom corner. Soham had chances to equalise shortly after however Clayton and Carden both put wide. The Greens were forced into a change just after the half hour with Mochalski replacing the injured Buddle. The substitute headed over from Kaye’s corner five minutes later, before Pope was forced to tip his ball back towards goal over his own bar. But with three minutes of the half remaining, the Swifts doubled their lead when Gardner delivered the ball across the Soham area with Juan Luque spinning to place a low shot past Pope.
The visitors made a double tactical change at the interval with Gillies and Norman coming on for Russell and Gardner, with the substitutes combining as Soham pulled a goal back four minutes after the restart when Gillies knocked Norman’s angled ball into the area from the left back into the path of Sam Mulready who placed into the bottom corner. As the game progressed, chances became more limited with Pope making saves to deny Gardner and Krasniqi before the Greens were reduced to ten men in the 69th minute when assistant manager Erkan Okay was dismissed for his second yellow card of the game. Pope was the busier keeper in the final twenty minutes thwarting the hosts as the keeper came off his line to deny Ashford before making a save to keep out Gardner’s angled shot. As the game moved into stoppage time, Sambridge made a fine save to tip over Carden’s shot from Mulready’s ball, whilst following a quick break, Price was given plenty of room to square the ball across the area with Pope again coming off his line to block Ashford.
