Redditch Borough 4 Moors Academy 0

*Young Moors lose on opening day - by Ronald Crane*

Moors Academy have never won an opening day fixture. The statistic was not altered after this match, played on a sultry afternoon at Cherry Tree Walk, Batchley.

Borough are physically big who use their physical presence to play robust football. Indeed, without being in any way “dirty” they bullied their young opponents from the first whistle. A long ball into the Moors area caused hesitation in the defence, Iqbal used his strength to score with 34 seconds on the clock. It was a blow to the Moors, and although they tried to play their passing game, it did not look convincing.

Within a minute of going behind, they forced a corner and then were awarded a free kick 20-yards out. From both these efforts, the attempt on goal was off target. It was to be a reoccurring theme. Borough using physical strength, Moors failing to hit the target.

Without using it as an excuse, one has to say that the playing surface was poor with bare patches devoid of grass. Yet, as they say, it is the same for both sides.

Blessing Nhundu produced a string of crosses from the right, but no one managed to get on the end of them.

It was no surprise when some 14 minutes into the game, the home side doubled their lead. It was, as with their first goal, a Moors mistake. It allowed Albutt to bundle the ball home. He reached the ball before ‘keeper Maxwell, and was never going to squander the chance.

For the rest of the first 45 minutes it was a story of Moors playing all the football, with Borough content to pack their defence and keep what they had been given.

As with the beginning of the first half, Borough scored in the first minute of the second. Sloppiness in defence let in Albutt who scored unopposed.

Moors continued to dominate the midfield and got a succession of crosses into Borough’s area. All were missed, squandered, or cleared with minimum attention from the Moors front men.

Six minutes later, yet another defensive mix-up allowed the impressive Iqbal to walk the ball over the line. He even had time to stop with the ball an inch from the goal-line and invite a challenge before tapping the ball home.

Four nil down they may have been: Not coping with the home side’s physical presence: the Young Moors never stopped playing their passing game. The problem was that from area to area they out-played their opponents with ease; yet in their own area, and in Borough’s area, the home side were the boss. They are, of course, the parts of the pitch that matter.

Sam Manoochehri, the Young Moors Manager, said afterwards: “We found it difficult to cope with their physical presence. We have to learn,
and learn quickly.”
