On 28th May, Southam travelled to Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club to take part in the 2016 Midlands Sevens. - Report by Steve West

The tournament consisted of a superleague of 7 teams creating a gruelling timetable where only the fittest would survive. There would then be a play off for the cup for teams in 1st and 2nd and a playoff for the plate for teams 3rd and 4th. Often time only allowed a 10 minute rest between matches. The day involved a well-attended Women’s competition too adding to a happy and friendly atmosphere created by the organisers.

Southam’s squad consisted of 3 strong colts (Bay Toner, Josh Savage and Joe Hughes), two prospective players (Ollie Burman and Louis Smith) and Southam stalwarts (Liam Munro, Sam Bench, Will Wood, Modis Bekeris and Steve West) – A squad of only 10 players needed for 98 minutes of sevens-pace rugby!! Munro and Wood proved to be strong playmakers with Toner and Burman being the ‘ball winners’… a system that worked well along with prop, Modis ‘Serevi’ Bekeris, who provided some much needed physicality. Smith, Savage, Hughes and Bench were sent running all day!! West spent the afternoon as the ‘target’ for the tournament’s South Sea Islanders!

Results:
Southam (50) – Atherstone (5) WIN
Southam (21) – Derby (28) LOSE
Southam (21) – Sutton Coldfield A (22) LOSE
Southam (45) – Wednesbury (7) WIN
Southam (28) – Aston (5) WIN
Southam (45) – Sutton Coldfield B (0) WIN

This saw Southam through to the Plate final as 3rd place in the league. Here we moved to the stadium pitch to meet 4th place Aston once again. Aston were the fresher of the two teams and came out on top beating a weary but dogged Southam 28 – 17 in the final. Derby were victorious as winners of the entire competition and went home with a £400 prize.

Our Southam team were able to match all of the teams in the competition and every individual is worthy of praise for some excellent performances. In particular, the 3 colts Bay Toner, Josh Savage and Joe Hughes were impressive and stepped up to exceed what was required of them.
