Southam work hard for 4 try bonus points

Southam 20 - 32 Old Silhillians

Southam had to rejig again through injury and unavailability, leaving them with a light pack.Captain Will Grindal moved to scrum half and coach John Howden into fly half.

Sils used their extra weight in the drives and although Southam knocked them down, Sils made the metres, this caused Southam to push the boundary of the laws to keep Sils out and after 25 minutes and multiple penalties, Howden was unlucky to take the team yellow card. The 10 minutes with 14 men was significant with a loss of 12 points, Sils got their first converted try from a missed touch and ran it back, laid it off to go in under the posts, 5 minutes later Sils drove up the pitch in the forwards and got stopped on the 5m having sucked in the Southam defence, they spread it blind to an overlap for a try in the corner. Towards half time Sils used their big forwards to drive from their own half into Southam half, they broke through for 15m recycled drove again to the 5m and again found a big overlap for the try in the corner. Southam got on the board as the half closed, from a scrum on the half way Grindal made blind side break and chipped forward to secure a 5m line out. Southam hammered in the forwards, but could not get over until the ball was put out to centre Pete Burnell, right on the touch line and he spun away from two defenders to sneak in for the try.
HT 5 - 17

Southam kept Sils at bay and after 10 minutes of pressure, Sils had to settle for a penalty on the 22m for holding on. 15 minutes in on slow ball from a line out on the halfway Lowden found the gap and stepped all the way through defence, good support from Bench as he took the ball outside the 22m rounded two defenders and went over for the try. Southam's recovery looked to be short lived as Sils came straight back, when the ball spilled from a Southam scrum on their 22, the Sils scrum half, hacked through and a back row chased and picked up for the converted try. Just 5 minutes later Sils got a simple try from from a loop that left full back Billy Clarke in a losing battle with 2 men to cover as they got the try. Charlie Gilkes came on a at prop allowing, Matt Catterall to move to No8, this steadied up the scrum ball and with some clean possession Southam managed to get back in the game. With 10 minutes to go, Lowden put in a miss pass to Wood on the halfway, Wood rounded his opposite man, committed the full back and fed Bench for his second. 6 minutes later Wood took another miss pass, rounded his man again with a nice hand off and went all the way for the try.
FT 20 - 32

A tough day at the office for Southam, who took until the middle of the second half to start getting some clean
ball, when they got it, they produced some good rugby and fought back hard to get a 4 try bonus point
