Nuneaton Old Edwardians 34 - 7 Southam

A frustrating day for Southam with 5 changes against a Nuneaton Old Eds team freshened by some coaching input from Wasp's Jimmy Gopperth

Southam were under pressure in the scrum from the off and the pressure got Old Ed’s into the Southam 22 and a mismatch on the blind saw the Ed’s No8 go down the line for a try. Full back Jon Lowden stopped a certain try by getting under the ball, but from the resulting scrum the Old Ed’s scrum half nipped over for a converted try. Southam started to get some ball, but could not retain it, struggling on their own scrums and line outs. After 30 minutes, Southam conceded a penalty in front posts for a ruck infringement and the half drew to a close with no further score.
HT 15 - 0

For a full 25 minutes of the second it was honours even, but the half turned with Old Ed's on the Southam line and wing Charlie Monro got off the line after a slow flat ball from the a ruck, he intercepted and was off. He was a judged offside and yellow carded even though not last player. Old Ed's took a scrum and got a penalty try from the pushover. From the kickoff Old Ed's got a lineout inside the 22, drove and sucked players in and when the ball was spun out, Southam were a player short and the Old Ed's centre went through the gap for a converted try. Southam took some chances and on the Eds 22 an interception temping, long pass from wing forward Pete Burnell, was secured by centre Will Wood and he spun out, stepped and with a hand off was through for a try under the posts, converted by Tolley. Southam were down to 13 men after prop Charlie Gilkes was injured in a scrum and then 2nd row James LLoyd was yellow carded for a high tackle. Old Ed took advantage and drove over for there final try.
FT 34 - 7

It was hard and frustrating day for Southam, as it is very hard to get any go forward, if you are not winning regular scrum and lineout ball. Southam worked hard with a tackle count in the region 4 to 1 of Old Ed's, notably Dylan Pink, Jake Wagstaff, Matt Taylor, Bay Toner and Harry Hewson.
