Old Silhillians 23 - 10 Southam
This was a crucial game for Southam, who were nearly back to full available strength, but they failed to capitalise on their initial dominance.
Southam had the best of the first quarter and did not let Sills into their half, but could not turn that pressure into points, they came close when scrum half, Tom Boag dummied on the base of a ruck on the 22 and made it all the way to the 5m. Sills started to get some dominance in the second quarter, with Southam misfiring in the lineout. Eventually Sills got on the board when they got a scrum penalty on the 22, when their front row stood up.
HT 3 - 0
Sils missed a penalty for a dubious 'high' tackle and Southam worked there way up the field, but struggled to command the space as the lineout was still not working, as they persevered at 2 & 4. 15 minutes in, a miss move by Sills on the halfway got them all the way up to the 5m, the ball was recycled and chipped to the wing, where the No4 gathered and neatly fed the wing for the converted try.
Southam got back into the Sills 22 and Boag again stepped at the base and nearly got to the line and just missed feeding captain Will Grindal in the tackle.
Southam built again and with good pressure from full back Jon Lowden and centre Tom Grimes, got back into the Sills 22. At a ruck Boag used a run from Grimes to sell the dummy and and step through for the try, converted by Grindal.
Sills came straight back with a harsh penalty on the 22 for not rolling away.
30 minutes in Sills got another penalty for another dubious 'high' tackle
At the close Southam got a scrum penalty, converted by Grindal, Southam did not handle the kickoff well and Sills got a penalty on the Southam 22 for going in at the side. The penalty took a rough bounce of the post pad and the Sills wing forward pounced on it for the converted try.
FT 23 - 10
This game was a set back for Southam, but was winnable. If they can sort out the lineout and get a plan B, if 2 & 4 are not working and also rein in the penalties they have a side that can win games.
