Rugby St. Andrews 2's 5 - 24 Southam 2's
The machine marches into Xmas like the Duracell bunny as the only unbeaten team in the Warwickshire 2’s league.
Southam had Dylan Pinker and Sam Bailey making their 2’s Debuts for the season. Both played exceptional well, with Dylan going straight into the trenches at Prop. Southam put early pressure on St Andrews with hard tackles and great line speed in defence. However Southam found themselves defending their own line with some very good positional kicking from St Andrews. The Southam defence stayed strong with some strong tackles and putting bodies on the line, which the Southam 2’s have done all season. Captain Phil Nichols managed to relieve the pressure by stealing the St Andrews ball at a maul and Josh Tolley kicking for territory. Southams line out got them out on trouble on several occasions with Sammy Duckett's pin point throwing accuracy to second row Barney Galiffe to secure their own ball. Throughout the half Southam found themselves unable to keep possession for long periods and getting frustrated. The defining moment of the 1st half was the St Andrews No8 being Red carded for stamping on centre Flo Neales head at a ruck. He continued to argue with the ref and his supporters turning it to football fans and abusing the ref. Southam capitalised on the 14 man advantage with scrum half Nichols sniping from a scrum on the half way line, taking a hit to the ribs, but getting the pass away for Josh Tolley to score under the posts, Tolley then converted his own try leaving the score at half time
0 - 7.
Unfortunately Flo Neale, whilst enjoying his debut at centre had to go off at half time with a damaged shoulder, mainly due to the his monstrous hits in the mid field. Veteran Nick Sandy moving to tight head and Dylan Pinker moving to centre. Southam started the second half well by managing the get quick ball out the the backs. Dylan Pinker ran a great line at centre to put fellow centre Josh Evans in for his 1st try for Southam and Tolley converted making the score 0 - 14. Rugby St Andrews came back strong and managed to keep possession for long periods, Southam's defence held firm across the line with Pete Mann and Will Allan making some huge tackles. St Andrews finally scored in the corner but unable to convert. Southam's pressure continued in the scrums, managing to get the drive on the St Andrews pack, when the Rugby St Andrews fly half had his kick charged down by Southam's blindside flanker Adam Webster. The fly half fumbled the ball and Josh King managed to steal the ball and score his second try of the game. This seemed to be the final nail in the coffin for St Andrews and
Southam were awarded a penalty in the dying seconds of the game, opting to go for the posts, Josh Tolley converted the penalty.
Final Score 5 - 24.
Man of the match was Josh Evans for his two tries and great defence.
This result makes Southam 2’s the only unbeaten team in the Warwickshire 2’s league in 2017.
