Rugby Lions 2’s 5 - 34 Southam 2’s
A much changed Southam side soon gelled at Rugby Lions for an and started strong by winning a penalty and gaining valuable territory on the field. Another penalty awarded to Southam led to a dominant scrum on the Lions 5m line, the scrum led to quick hands down the line for Ryan Stephens to score the first try of the game, converted by wing Greg Gillbard. Lions bounce back on the attack and put Southam under pressure, Southam give away a penalty on their own 5 which led to a quick tap and Lions try. Southam put in good pressure from the kick off regaining possession with a turnover in a ruck, followed by quick and accurate passing down the line, which allowed Gilbard get a try in the 20th minute. Lions pile on the pressure and eventually make a break down the wing, however a missed pass into touch from Lions awards Southam a lineout on their own 5m line. Strong defence in the lineout allowed Southam to get the ball out of their own 22 with a kick for touch. Barney wins the Lions lineout and the ball was passed down the line for Stephens’s 2nd try of the game scored, converted by Gilbard. Southam gaining confidence, piled on the pressure, causing lions to fumble possession into their own try area and quick thinking centre Joe Brain dived on the loose ball, for Southam’s 4th try of the game later converted by Gilbard (26-5). Southam step up in defence and push Rugby Lions back into their own 22, from a scrum due knock on, the ball was spread to Gilbard, who scored in the corner for his 2nd try of the game.
Southam started the second half strong and continued to pile the pressure on, with some patient defending and resulting in another turnover from a ruck, the forwards gained yards towards the Lions try line. Veteran Phil Evans used his many years of experience to spot an opportunity for a quick darting run through the defensive line for the try. Southam are reduced to 14 men when a yellow card is shown to Chris Gillet for a high tackle. This however this did not disrupt the excellent Southam performance and with the last play of the game, a dropped pass by Lions was hacked on up the middle of the field and with great pickup from Adam Webster, he ran the ball over for the last try of the game, converted by Gilbard
