Southam 2’s 37 - 19 Earlsdon 2’s

Southam Started the 2019 season against Earlsdon in the League at home. Earlsdon turned up with 13 players and thus forfeited the league points before the game.

Southam were camped on the Earlsdon line early on with some strong running from number eight Wez Hallam but unable to score. Southam were a bit rusty from the Xmas break and found themselves 0 - 14 down, even with a two man advantage. They had problems trying to play a barbarian style game with offloads and forcing passes and this was not working for them.
Southam got on the score board with fly half Charlie Rooney scoring a try from a chip over the top of the Earlsdon defence and converting. Southam had their tails up and managed to score from a passive scrum, the ball went sailing through the backs and with an overlap flanker Will Eadon scores in the corner.
HT 12 - 14

At half time veteran Dan Whitfield gave the team some great advice on icing the tackling and fronting up in defence. The team took this on board. Southam were winning the breakdowns and disrupting the Earlsdon line out, second row Alex Kidd was a pest at the line out and really pressured the Earlsdon scrum half. More tries came from centre Tom Wright, second row Alex Kidd and a second for Will Eadon. Scrum half and captain Phil Nichols ran the forwards around and probing kick ball for the backs, making sniping breaks. The back line was organised by full back Kiron Phillips, who helped debutant wingers Jasper Church and Tobias Squire make good breaks. Southam Defence held strong with some strong tackling by centres Ryan Stephens and Tom Wright. Unfortunately Earlsdon scored in the corner making the game tight until Southam were over the line again. Fly Half Charlie Rooney kept the pressure on his boot kept putting Southam in great attacking positions. In the last minute of the game Centre Ryan Stephens was shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle.
FT 27 - 19.

This result puts Southam 2’s to the top of the Warwickshire Division 1 2’s league.

MOTM Was awarded to Wez Hallum for his amazing line out work and strong ball carrying.
