Southampton ladies 22, Jersey ladies 14
Another win for the ladies!
Southampton Ladies rugby team made it two wins from two league games and maintained their 100% start to the 2018/19 season in National Challenge South 2.
This weekend brought a hard fought win in the Channel Islands.
Both visiting Saints and home side Jersey had won their opening league fixtures, but - in a league
contest that ebbed and flowed superbly throughout - it was the Southampton side whom ran out 22-14 victors.
Kirsty Donnellan, co-founder and manager of the team, was delighted with the result, and said: “This was a great all round team effort and a strong performance against good, tough opposition on their turf in front of a home crowd. We’re really pleased, chuffed to bits, and it’s been an excellentstart to the season. We are looking for that top table spot.” The team finished 2nd last season, with Jersey, respectfully in 3rd place, so the team knew this was going to be a key match this season.
Southampton put Jersey under pressure early one with a try in the first 3 minutes from lock Sophie Holt, unfortunately the conversion was unsuccessful from Saints kicker Amy Brittan.
In a quick comeback, the Jersey ladies, scored their first try and successfully converted, taking the score to 7-5 in favour of the hosts.
Not letting the score perturb them, Saints came back again strong and in just another few minutes, flanker Wendy Fox made a break to score another try for the team, with this time the conversion hitting it's mark.
Jersey fought back, scoring another converted try under the posts shortly before half time, taking them in to the lead before the break, the score 14-12.
The close, physical game picked up again in the second half, with an early try from Southampton's winger Becky Phillips.
This time, Jersey were losing their gas and Southampton's defence was strong, preventing any further scores from the hosts.
The final score came from Saints full back Chloe Barrett, in an excellent display of footwork and speed.
The final score was 22-14 to Southampton.
A great display from the whole team and the hard work put in at training with coach James (Badger) Greenwood. Oonagh Knights was forward to the match with Phillips back of the match. 2 fannies of the field; no 8 Colette Baker and centre Naomi Andrews!
